Black American Book Publishing
Companies
Black American Book Publishing Companies really
interest some African American writers seeking to get published
more than others. I know when I was looking for a company for
my first book, I was simply looking for the company that had
the deal that best suited my particular needs;
financially.
It wasn’t that I was especially looking for a
Christian publisher, though I’m a Christian; or an African
American publisher, though I am that too. I would have
preferred to work with a Christian company over any other but
at the time, these companies weren’t offering the best deal for
me.
Black American Book Publishing Companies may be
able to well suit the needs of some in practical
ways.
Black American Book Publishing Companies have
some pros and cons for any given author that you should
consider. I being the owner of GMA Publishing am an African
American and yet don’t especially market our company in this
way. We market our company as a Christian company who publishes
the works of all ethnicities
easily.
So then it is how a company markets themselves that
creates the distinction for the company. A Christian may own a
publishing company and still not label his business a
“Christian” business; but if he/she does, then you know the
vision, focus, and specialty of that company.
Some possible benefits of Black
American Book Publishing Companies may
include:
- Cater to a target niche. Catering to a target
niche is especially important for traditional book
publishers versus self publishing services companies like
us, because they will take control of the distribution onto
the shelves of bookstores that their authors receive. They
have more control of your book so you want to work with a
company who better understands the black consumer market to
which you are writing if this is target group in your
book.
- Find unique and personalized marketing and
promotion venues and tools. If you are seeking a
traditional publisher and they are promising some level of
marketing for you (which most don’t) you will find it
beneficial to working with a Black American Book Publishing
Company.
- Design Customization. If you want your book
really appeal to an African American market then you may
find an option of Black American Book Publishers especially
helpful in your cause.
- Editing Services. If you’re publishing with a
traditional Black American Book Publisher then you may
benefit from their editing department for dialect that
specifically appeals to an African American reader. This
may be more applicable to fiction authors unless your
non-fiction work is written to an African American
audience.
Here are some thoughts that make seeking a publisher
only because they are an African American book publisher
irrelevant.
- If you’re self publishing. If you are self
publishing your book, you really need the help of a company
like us to complete the production of your book. With a
company like us, YOU dictate what look and feel in design
you want, not us.
- You will control the marketing of your book. You
can decide whether you want to hire a publicist that caters
to the African American community or some other target
market so it really doesn’t matter if you publish with a
black American book publisher.
These are some possible benefits of seeking out Black
American Book Publishers for your project. In my personal
opinion, unless your book is a subject that speaks directly to
an African American audience, choosing a company based on the
race of its owners isn’t crucial.
It is, however, important if you’re seeking a company
that can refine your book into being one that especially
appeals to an African American audience, and if you will be
seeking that company’s connections in your promotional
campaign.
