Book Marketing is
one of the most important aspects of the publishing process.
Without learning how to use effective book marketing tools and
strategies your book won’t reach its potential.
Many of us writers could lock ourselves up for days on a beach,
or maybe in cabin in the mountains, or maybe in the serenity of
the woods, or maybe…See what I’m saying! We as writers are many
times, perfectionist thinkers who can float around in the
stratosphere of higher thinking for ever.
But the truth is we will never be successful authors if we
don’t come down off that intellectual mountain and learn how to
sell books. That’s where book marketing comes into
play.
The general rule of thumb is that you will spend 10% of your
time writing your book and 90% of your time promoting that
book. Many beginning authors often think “If I write it, they
will come.” When I wrote my first book, I thought the
exact same way. I wasn't as bad as some people
because I did plan some events around the release date
of my book but I didn’t really understand how much of
a business writing a book really is.
Your Book is Your Business
Not many people would really expect to open a business and not
have to market their business service and/or product to their
target customer. There are classes in school that teach
business marketing but not many classes that teach book
marketing, which is vital to the author.
As an author, you must accept that you are starting a business
of sorts. Now granted, authors have topped the list as having
the overall best career in the world. I read this on a list a
few months ago buy a reputable source that out of actors,
business owners, doctors, lawyers, CEO’s, etc, writers enjoy
the very best of all the benefits available.
This is a very rewarding industry to be a part of if you learn
how to market your books. I see my book as a business
so I work hard at taking advantage of the many marketing
tools available to me.
Here are some of the
best book marketing tools for authors:

Free
Publicity. This
includes Radio interviews, TV interviews, newspaper and
magazine write-ups, and any other free spot light
opportunities. Free publicity is the best publicity that you
can get for your book. You will sell far more books by being
talked about than you will by paying for advertisements.

Press
Release. This
speaks to the free publicity tool. You should create a press
release and send it to your local media and national niche
media about you and your book. The key to getting your press
release included in a publication is to make your book relevant
to some national current topic.

Book
Signing. I’m not
talking about doing a book signing at the local book store
thinking that you’re going to sell a ton of books. You need to
try to work with the biggest book store in your town, (we like
Barnes and Noble), to see if you can do a free seminar and sell
copies of your book at the event. If you’ve got a topic that
people are interested in then the book store will likely want
to do the event. They you can sell a lot of books, because your
books sell when you present them to a live
audience.

Speaking.
This
leads me to talking about a great way, one of the very top ways
of selling a lot of books; doing speaking events. You need to
start speaking at events, groups, clubs, organizations, book
stores, churches, or on the streets for all I care! You need to
get booked up to sell books. Back of the room sales at your
speaking events will sell more books for you than any paid
advertisement that you could possibly do so speak to sell
books.

Bulk
Orders. Try to
get bulk orders from organizations who can use your book. This
works well for management books to large
companies.

Book Marketing. You need

Tele-Seminars.
Remember
how I was telling you that you need to speak to sell books?
