Kick Start Your Freelance Writing Career

A freelance writing career is waiting for you! You could be earning money from home, using your writing talent. I love my job and I have learned how to make money from writing content and I want to share some helpful tips to getting your career going in the publishing industry.

1.    Pursue Mastery of Your Writing Skills. We must always learn more about noun and verb agreement as well as the topic on which we write. We have to learn to express ourselves ever greater through the written word. When people read our work, we have to display ability and gifting and expression. These things will give our work personality and will cause more readers to pursue our work.

This doesn’t mean that you use bigger words or write more complex sentences. Actually, the more simple our sentence structure is and the shorter, more common words we use, the more people will be able to get into our writing. Most people read at an 8th grade reading level, so writing to far above that will cut down your marketability.

Nevertheless, you do want to use a wide variety of more common words. Don’t use the same few. Think of words as colors or sounds. The more colors and sounds that you have in your content, the better.

2. Learn How to Market Your Self. You need to build a good website or blog in order to display your work. The sites we build can be turned into blogs and RSS feeds in order to get fast indexing online, but having a content based website will keep your site ranking high whereas a blog will not, unless you update it constantly.

3.    Learn to Write Great Query Letters.  Online and print editors ask for these before they give you a job to do. (I have an article on writing a good query letter in another article in the freelance writing section of this site.)

The single most important thing for you to know is that “Writers Write!” We say this all the time to ourselves and the authors we coach.
