How to Hire a
Ghost Writer -
Everything You Need to
Know
Hiring a ghostwriter can be a great way for authors to get
their book completed. There are a variety of reasons that you
might want to consider hiring a ghostwriter to help you
accomplish your goals.
Too Busy. Some people are just too busy doing
one thing or another, to write their own book. Most likely if
you’re considering hiring a ghostwriter, you have a firm
understanding of the awesome benefits of writing a book and
want to capitalize on your expertise, expand your business, and
add a new stream of income.
If you are in the information business, meaning you earn a
living by speaking, educating, coaching, and/or communicating
with people, you’ve got to have a book. A ghostwriter can help
you accomplish your goal.
Can’t Write. Some people just don’t write
well. Especially if you’re writing a fiction book and you have
a great concept but can’t write fiction, you will greatly
benefit from a ghostwriter. Fiction book authors find the
greatest use out of a ghostwriter because the entire book is
hinged on the talent of story telling. For many people, all the
learning that must be done to become a good fiction writer is
just too deep. Better to just hire someone to bring the vision
alive.
Don’t Have the Discipline. Some people don’t
have the discipline that it takes to be a writer. To me writing
comes very easy, but there are plenty things that I hire out
that I don’t like to do- like cut the grass. Yikes! So if you
happen to not have the discipline to write but understand its
importance to your career, by all means hire a
ghostwriter.
Here’s What You can Expect:
It’s going to cost a lot. The problem that most authors will
immediately have is that you’re going to pay anywhere between
$15,000-$30,000 for ghostwriter to write your book depending on
a couple of things.
The amount of credit that give the ghostwriter will dictate
price. If you give them more credit, like saying that you wrote
your book with them on your cover could lower your price. If
you just acknowledge them in your book but don’t list them as a
co-author, your price will be more. If you don’t acknowledge
the ghostwriter at all, your price will most likely be even
higher.
That means you need to really try to get creative and come up
with a win-win deal that benefits both yourself and the
ghostwriter. The best way to get out of paying huge upfront
cost to a ghostwriter is to make an offer they can’t
refuse.
You’ve got to put your business cap on and really assess the
value your information has and your ability to sell books,
because if you’ve got a book that will practically be able to
sell a lot, then you can negotiate a partnership opportunity
with a ghostwriter and pay little money upfront.
Otherwise, you might as well forget about hiring a ghostwriter
and shut your business down for a month to write that book
because paying up to $30,000 will put you under. Stats show
that most books don’t sell over 200 copies so they don’t make
anywhere near $30,000 in revenue.
But even if you do sell thousands of books, which you will if
you’re enlightened, have common sense, and basic business
sense, hiring a ghostwriter is a huge profit
drainer.
I said at the beginning of this page that hiring a ghostwriter
can be a great option for the right author. The right author is
the one who’s selling hundreds of thousands of books and thus
can easily absorb hiring a ghostwriter for one of their books.
I would definitely not recommend this for a beginning
author.
Helpful info and
resources
Find the right writer. You need to search for the right
ghostwriter- one who writes in your genre and that you can
connect with on a personal level. This is your heart and soul
you are sharing in your book, so you want someone who can
“feel” you on that level.
