Writing a Novel
and a Query Letter to Get Published
After writing a novel that reads great you then must turn your
attention as to how you want to publish it. I definitely
recommend self publishing for authors, especially if this is
your first book.
Nevertheless, I will share some information on putting a query
letter together for those who want to try to get a traditional
book publishing deal. Completing a strong and solid query
letter is the first step in getting your book seriously looked
at, even before writing a novel that’s good. Because no one is
going to read your novel to learn what it’s about, but an agent
will read your query letter.
Here’s what your query letter must
include:
1.
The first
paragraph should be a brief summary of the book. This summary
should be short, no more than 130 words or so. It needs to be
written in the present tense. You need to write it in such a
way that it demonstrates what the book is about and where you
are going with it. You can get good ideas of how to write this
by looking at the back of books from the bookstore; bestsellers
in your genre, of course. That’s what your summary will be, an
excerpt like the back of a book cover.
2.
The
second paragraph needs to focus on describing the market of
people you are trying to reach and what your book is similar
too. This makes it easy for agents to see where you are going
and what your book is like. Decide what genre you are trying to
reach and what type of reader. You can then show what type of
readers will like your book compared with a bestselling author
who has your same readers.
3.
The third
paragraph is where you begin to list your credits, accolades,
and experiences that are relevant to your novel’s topic. You
want to thank the agent for their time and ask them if they
would like you to send them 2 or 3 chapters of your book for
further consideration.
When writing a novel and proceeding with the publishing of it,
you have to consider the importance of a query letter in
getting your novel in the hands of a capable agent, who can
then get your novel into the hands of a
publisher.
